THE PROBLEM

Residents in the Madison area are often on the go and grabbing lunch during their lunch breaks with a very limited time frame.

THE GOAL

Design an app for Bueno Tacos that allows for a convenient and easy way to order and pick up food from their food truck.

MY ROLE

UX designer designing the application Bueno from conception to delivery including developing their brand identity and conducting UX research.

The Summary

I conducted interviews and was able to create an empathy map to attempt to understand the users I would be designing for. A majority group that was identified though my initial research was residents in Madison, WI who often grab lunch during their work week at local establishments that are in close proximity to their place of employment.

Research revealed that limited time wasn’t the only contributing factor as to where they grab lunch, but they preferred establishments that were clear in regards to their ingredients due to potential food allergies or restrictions.

Ideation

This portion of the project allowed me to ideate quickly and explore different iterations of what the app could look like. Starting with paper wireframes ensured that elements designated for digital wireframes were thoughtfully considered.

Prototype

Digital Wireframes

As I worked through developing the design, I created digital wireframes based on my initial paper wireframes as well as the feedback and data gathered from the user research.

A way to filter the menu was something that was important to include based on the user research as well as a variety of payment methods for convenience.

Test

Usability Testing

I conducted two rounds of usability studies for this project. The first round of findings helped refine the design. The second study helped catch additional pain points.

Conclusion

Impact

The new Bueno Tacos app takes user’s needs into consideration by providing an app where you can easily order from your favorite local taco truck in Madison, WI with total ease. One quote from a user “The app makes ordering so easy, being able to know exactly when my order will be ready really cuts down the time to pick up my food.”

What I learned

What I learned while designing the Bueno’s Tacos app, was what is important for users when ordering from an app and how a poorly design experience can result in users never want to order from a particular establishment again.

Next Steps

If I were to continue to work on this project, I would take the steps below in order to do so.

Step 1

Conduct another round of usability studies to determine if there are any further pain points that need to be addressed within the design.

Step 2

Refine the prototype according to the results of the usability studies as well as design the application to be available in more than one language.

Step 3

Create a dark mode version of the app as well as conduct further research on how the application and be more accessible.
